Released in 1984, AutoCAD’s design tool was a groundbreaking shift for the CAD industry. By 1989, when the first AutoCAD release for the Apple Macintosh debuted, the program had already replaced the entire CAD industry’s previous approach of drawing 2D plans on large sheet-punching machines.
A decade later, AutoCAD was still the industry standard for designing 2D and 3D plans and diagrams, and in addition to the desktop release, the software was released as a cloud service.
Today, the company sells several types of CAD software. Its flagship software is AutoCAD, which is optimized for 2D and 3D drafting. Autodesk was formed in 1982 by three engineers from Stanford University: Kris Narkis, Richard Dowling, and Ed Simonson. With a $500,000 investment from their parent company, Stanford-based financier Forrest Mars, the trio established Autodesk as a CAD software company.
In the 1980s, many CAD companies were based on the mainframe, and many CAD users worked in close quarters with other users using interactive whiteboards, while computers themselves were built into large rooms. This environment made it difficult for workers to collaborate with others on projects, while leading to a “high cost of change” in the product, or change in any large CAD program.

3D modeling and drafting
As with 2D drafting, the modeling toolbar allowed the user to draw a number of 3D primitives using a mechanical gripper. The list included circles, rectangles, ellipses, axes, cones, cylinder, lens, planes, prisms, pyramids, spheres, and surfaces. Also included was a 3D extrude tool that could be used to extrude, section, or sweep out the boundaries of a 3D model.
