How much does a WAN set up cost?
A typical long-haul TCP/IP network requires two WAN connections and, to optimize performance and reliability, also requires a backup connection. The two WAN connections are:
A Dedicated Connection that is available continuously, 24/7. Typically it is a T1 connection that is often leased and maintained by a carrier and typically comprises the primary connection between a remote site and the Data Centre.
A Reserve Connection that, upon the failure of the primary connection, is pre-maturely brought online and is typically leased from an Internet Service Provider (ISP). This is typically a lower-bandwidth connection often provided using DSL or cable modems.
Both connections, for example T1 or DSL, are required for the following reasons:
To ensure a continuous (24/7) connection to the Data Centre (DC)
To offer a backup in case the primary connection fails.
A primary connection has a long history and proven reliability. In most cases, this is a connection to a Data Centre where the data is processed in the DC and the data can be stored in a very reliable infrastructure, such as a Tier-3 Data Centre or, more likely, a DC.
For small and medium-sized companies, the only choice is to lease a T1 connection or a DSL connection from an ISP. The business can then turn up and down the reserve connection as required and so offer a useful alternative.
For large companies, however, there is another alternative: interconnect with a Tier-3 DC or a Direct-to-Customer (D2C) provider which offers a T1/Ethernet connection, and so can, and usually does
